Thanks for the generous read and response. Yes, I think Rosenblatt is one of the lenses that would figure prominently in a post-“close reading” world. I personally think that students (and teachers!) should have an opportunity to try out and gain proficiency with several lenses. I really think the tests implicitly punish this. The high-stakes standardized test waiting at the end strongly influences whose writing and reading is valued. The writers and readers who can be “invisible,” as Rosenblatt puts it, are very often white writers and readers, since invisibility is a power and privilege enjoyed by whiteness!
