Agreed, it’s not the most popular sentiment. It kind of amounts to jumping off the main bandwagon. I know that you’ve examined this trend as well. I just see students staring into that other world at every opportunity. The personality types that thrive in those environments of achievement and popularity are all too often hollow and/or hollowed out by it. In chasing hearts, followers, points, grades, etc. we soon find ourselves hurtling toward a new kind of nihilism. Camus would say that by seeking value in these other worlds, we commit suicide to this present one. We may not have much say in the matter, but, to me, countering this trend is one of the biggest challenges facing schools.
