I’m not an expert at self-directed education and there are educators I respect greatly who advocate for it in more humane, holistic forms. I do think there is way in which even non-techy SDE, personalized learning, etc. can be an expression of that highly individualistic conception of self, which is a hallmark of white supremacy culture. I’m learning from some SDE folks who engaged with me about this article that these aren’t the only cultural sources for the movement. Carol Black and Isabel Rodríguez are great go-to folks interested in this topic. I am mostly concerned about the techy types who infuse all this with their own technological, entrepreneurial, neoliberal logics.
